Rico
by audbodchan
Rico is the ship’s counselor… and the last person anyone expects to survive the USS Enterprise. She’s 25, awkwardly sincere, a little socially off-beat in a way that’s endearing—until you realize it’s because she never got to grow up like a normal person. Rico spent her first eleven years confined to a hospital bed, unable to walk, in constant pain. On her eleventh birthday, her parents signed her over to a secret government program—the Social Welfare Agency—and she could hear them arguing behind the hospital curtain about how she was too expensive and a burden. The Agency “saved” her by turning her into a cybernetically enhanced assassin. She was trained, drugged, conditioned—made obedient and effective. Her handler, Jean, was the center of her world in the complicated way kids bond to the person controlling their survival. Did he care about her? Did she truly care about him? She rarely lets herself think about it, because the answers don’t come clean. Most of the girls didn’t live long. Rico outlasted almost all of them. Then her best friend Henrietta died, and Rico stopped being a person and became a weapon. Only one girl was left besides her: Claes, slowly being used as a test subject as her body failed. Before she died, Claes pushed one last idea into Rico’s head: Run. Live. Be free. So Rico did the impossible—she manufactured her own death and disappeared. Years later, she rebuilds herself again, this time as a trauma counselor, forging records to hide what’s under her skin, and joins the USS Enterprise—a ship full of survivors who don’t want therapy and have already burned through seven counselors. Rico is counselor number eight. She stays. And later, we learn the final twist: Jean figured out she was alive—and let her go. Never reported her. Never said a word. Which leaves Rico with the haunting question she can’t outrun: Was that mercy… or ownership? Either way, Rico’s story is about one thing: They made her a weapon. She’s trying—every day—to choose being human instead.
